If you should need to call us, call Bobby Anderson. There are LDS and live a block away. Their
number is… Dearest Dad, Mom, Lynn, and Layne,
We really enjoyed your letter Friday. We had a safe and enjoyable but tiring trip
back from San Antonio last weekend. We
left San Antonio at 5 a.m. and arrived here at 10 p.m. It was surely wonderful to be back together
again. We are all eating better. The kids especially Tammy and Jamie are
eating better than they have in a long time.
Shirley’s knee is almost healed and looks really good. We have sold our house in San Antonio and
they will be moving in the early part of July.
That is really a relief! We have our other things sold or taken care of
or ready to be shipped or put in storage.
We are in the process of getting passports and shots. This should only take another three or four
weeks. We received word this morning
that concurrent travel has been approved so we will be going together. As to our plans they are still subject to
change but as of now we will leave for San Antonio on the 5th of
August. It will take us until the 10th
or 12th of August to get cleared off Lackland and then two days to
travel to Utah. If we cannot get a delay we will have to leave for California
about the 27th so that means only a week with Mom and Dad Cloward
and only a week with you. We have asked
for an extension until the 15th of September which would give us an
additional two weeks but this is all up in the air at the present time. We will
let you know exactly what the situation is as soon as we hear. We will drive our car to California and ship
it from there.
Now as to your trip down here. We both think you will really enjoy it. So far the weather is nicer than San Antonio
and also cooler especially at night. We
have room for all of you there are three beds plus floor space. We would have
or at least I would be able to spend much more time with you if you arrived
here about the 30th of July or the 1st of August. The week of 1 August to 5 August is really
open with no work except my final test on the 1st of August. The rest is Graduation Exercises. We would love to have you be here that final
week and then travel on back through San Antonio to Utah with us. The motel would be a little expensive because
our house is sold and people will be in it by then. We would like to have Junelle and Marvel come
down here but they can meet us in San Antonio if they like. There is absolutely no need to worry about
the racial situation because there is none. Gay is not coming because of her
work.
I must close and get into bed. I am doing quite well in school but it is
extremely demanding.
All our love always,
Jim, Shirley, and kids
Included with the same letter was this from mom.
Jim didn’t know that I hadn’t told anyone about my knee, so
I will tell you quickly what happened.
About two weeks after he left I was getting the little ones ready for
Sunday School. I was looking for Terry’s
shoes and knelt down on the carpet to look under the bed. I guess a needle had woven itself into the carpet
and I knelt down on it. It broke off
almost half of it inside my knee. I
called one of the members of the church. She came and brought one of her
teenage daughters to stay with the kids and took me to the hospital. I had been
very careful not to move it too much (it hurt terribly where it went in) They
deadened it and made about an inch incision. They took it out and gave me a
tetanus shot. They put three stitches in
and put a cast on it from above my knee to my ankle. What a time I had. Believe me, there were many times during that
month that I wished so much we had taken your advice and gone with Jim, but I
guess it is a good thing we didn’t or we wouldn’t have been there to get things
taken care of on the house. We got it
all cleaned and ready for the people to move in as soon as the packers took our
things out.
We felt so badly about having to go so far away from all of
you again, but we are thankful that we can be together. We didn’t know until today that we could all
go over together so we are grateful for this.
The little ones are always talking about you and wondering when we are
going to see you. I don’t know how we will keep them pacified for three
years. At least here, we could see you
every few months anyway. This is the bad
part about being in the Air Force. I
guess we always have to take the bitter with the sweet though. I’m just so grateful that it wasn’t an order
for Vietnam or some other remote tour of duty.
We all love and miss you and are anxiously looking forward
to seeing you. We hope you will come
down. This is some of the most beautiful
country I have ever seen. It is almost
unbelievable.
